Translation and bridge-building between industrial needs and the (academic) research questions that need to be answered in order to provide business-relevant solution spaces.
In industry, the primary interest in carrying out research is to find solution spaces. For example, for a real or predicted technical issue arising with a current or future product, or for a new product functionality in order to meet new market trends. At universities and research institutes, the primary interest is often to understand technical/scientific mechanisms and to publish this in scientific journals. The two interests meet if the understanding gained in research can lead to control of the mechanisms underpinning the industrial issues, whereby solution spaces emerge.
